Time to over analyze a sample of what I’ll be listening to next week!
Over at the Bibliophile By the Sea, you can find First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday where everyone shares the first paragraph of the book they’re reading (or about to). In an effort to participate with my mostly audiobook blog, I’ve figured out a way to share samples of the audiobooks I’ll be listening to.
They give you the first five minutes, which usually turns out to be a REALLY long intro with very dramatic background music followed by a lot more than just one paragraph. Feel free to fast forward or cut it short. No worries, I get it—ain’t nobody got time for that.
The book for next week is…
All the Crooked Saints
Maggie Stiefvater is at it again! I am a complete NUT CASE about The Raven Cycle series and The Scorpio Races, so I am super freaking excited to start this one.
The sample begins off with a detailed description of a truck (did he just mention miracles like they’re a tangible object???) and reminds me of why I love Maggie Stiefvater so much. Like I could ever forget??? Then the narrator explains that the truck belongs to Beatriz and she’s listening to her radio station. It’s the station the Soria family created with the box truck acting as a mobile studio, but it’s really her station more than anyone else’s.
“Although it wasn’t her voice playing over the AM radio waves, it was her complicated and wiry heart powering them. Other people have smiles and tears to show how they feel. Enigmatic Beatriz Soria had a box truck full of transmitters in the Colorado Desert. If she cut herself, wherever she was, the speakers in the box truck bled.”
I don’t know what any of this means, but I friggin’ LIKE IT. Right now, without any context, I’m thinking it’s a metaphor. But this is a Maggie Stiefvater novel, so who knows. Those speakers could actually, LITERALLY bleed is she gets cut.
Apparently this radio station is DJ-ed by her youngest cousin Joaquin who has crazy, pompadour hair. I’m already a fan. He also has fear of dehydration??? I mean, they’re in the desert so I’ll hold back my judgement, but to combat this phobia he carries around enough water to “moisten him for days.” Ugh. Better watch it Stiefvater. I’m not going to be able to stick around if you’re going to use words like “moist.”
Overall, though, I’m super intrigued by this and can’t wait to get listening! In just five minutes they’ve managed to hook me with these characters and I’m ALREADY fretting over them.
TALK TO ME
Sound interesting?? Has anyone read All the Crooked Saints yet? WHAT DID YOU THINK???
Have any other favorite Stiefvater novels? I’m sure it’s The Raven Cycle because HOW COULD IT NOT BE??
(Could you tell I’m a fan??)
What else is everyone reading right now??
Holler at me in the comments!!
