Ten Years of City of Bones: Favorite Books

It’s week seven y’all!! I know, I can’t believe it either. But this week, I’m talking about my favorite (and not so favorite…) books in the series!

This is a special tenth anniversary blog meme created by the lovely Jessica over at Booked J. If you’d like to join the fun, learn more, and check out her answers click HERE!

Hellooooooo!!! I hope all my American friends had a lovely holiday last week! This post is soooooooo LATE!!! I’m so ashamed. I literally have no excuse except that I blacked out after turkey and woke up two hours ago. But I’m back and ready to gush about my favorite shadowhunter books!!

At the end of this post I rank them all in an epic list, but I feel the need to disclose AGAIN how I have not read “The Dark Artifices” yet. Why you ask? Because I’m terrible. If you read it looking for Lady Midnight or Lord of Shadows, you’ll be disappointed because again, ME = TERRIBLE. It DOES include “The Infernal Devices” trilogy though because HOW COULD IT NOT?!?!

Also, in the beginning I started writing this post as one giant list that ranked my favorite books with an explanation why for each one. Then I belatedly realized that my brain has mushed them all together into one giant story. The first three are pretty distinguishable in my head, but the last three have sort of blended together into mashed potato mush. And as much as I ADORE “The Infernal Devices,” good luck getting me to tell you where one ends and the other begins. Instead, I’ve decided to give you the highlights–best book, worst book, and my ranking list. EXCELSIOR!! Oh wait, wrong series…

City of Glass

AHHHHH I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH!!!! I didn’t even need to think about it when I read this week’s prompt. It’s by far my favorite book in “The Mortal Instrument” series and I’m so happy I finally have an excuse to flail about it. This novel is the culmination of so many things, both in the story and in my life. When this third installment came out, it was way back when I still thought this was going to be a trilogy (HA!!) and I was at the peak of my shadowhunter obsession. To say I was excited about the release is an understatement.

Then I read it and it was just so… AHHH!!! AMAZING!!!! Our favorite characters are tested in the biggest ways this time around, which means we see a different side to all of them. Watching them all rise to the occasion to fight against Valentine gave me all the feels and I loved watching their transformations. This was also when (and correct me if I’m wrong) we learn a lot about the history of our favorite parental units and it was really interesting hearing about their origin stories and discovering how Valentine came into power.

Plus, SO MUCH CLACE DRAMA!!! Oh my god, the angst with those two in this book is off the charts. Jace is all “We’re siblings, BUT I STILL LOVE YOU. I’M SO TERRIBLE. THAT’S WHY MY DEMON SOUL IS BLACK LIKE MY EMO HEART!!!” And Clary is like, “Y THO JACE?!?!?! Oh, Sebastian is cute–WAIT NO, EW. I TAKE IT BACK. NOT CUTE.” Did they frustrate the hell out of me? Yes. Did I love every freaking second? YOU BET I DID. And that entire scene with the angel and Valentine where Jace dies??? OH MY FREAKING GAWD.

City of Fallen Angels & City of Lost Souls

I feel like I’m always alone on this one, but these two are equally my least favorite books in the whole shadowhunter-verse. After the amazing-ness of the third book, the fourth and fifth fell completely flat for me. I was so over Sebastian by the time these rolled around and I hated having to hear about him for so long! He didn’t really scare me like Valentine did, he was just annoyingly creepy and wouldn’t stay dead. Plus, I had just spent two books watching Jace and Clary torture themselves and then when they can FINALLY be together Sebastian comes along an ruins it. His entire character just felt like a bad way to stretch out the series and I was not a fan.
